Americans have been told the caravan of migrants wants to get to the United States because of the poverty and desperation in their home countries such as Honduras. And there is a lot of crime, poverty and desperation there. But the migrants just turned down a big offer from Mexico who is alternately helping and trying to stop the caravan.

In an effort to stop the caravan from getting to the U.S. border and invoking the ire of President Donald Trump, President Enrique Pena Nieto made the migrants an offer of asylum and refugee status that would have included schooling, jobs, medical care and shelter.

That would seem to be a great deal for people if they are poverty-stricken and desperate.

1,700 applied for refugee status. But most turned the deal down.

...The condition was that they remain in the two Southe(r)n states therefore not proceeding north to the United States under the program.

Those of working age would clean, repair and maintain infrastructure in the two southern Mexican states, according to the program. Migrants can also obtain Mexico’s version of a social security number called CURP (Clave Unica de Registro Publico). This will allow the migrants to have legal proof of identity, enter and leave shelters and open bank accounts.

Mexico said that their desire to help to protect the human rights of migrants should not be interpreted as “an endorsement to irregular, massive and undocumented entry into Mexican territory.”

So why did most of the migrants turn down what sounds like a great deal?

Oscar Sosa, 58, explains, “Our goal is not to remain in Mexico. Our goal is to make it to the (U.S).”

They believe that by sheer force of size they will ultimately be granted asylum and/or be allowed into the U.S.
