The Credo of “Genevieve Glinch.” What a Typical Non-skeptic Citizen Believes in 2015
by Mary W Maxwell, PhD, LLB

I, Mary Maxwell, no longer believe all that I learned in school about history, or much of what I’ve read in the newspapers over the years. Yet most persons still accept the old information. Below, I’ll write a credo, as though it were coming from “your average citizen.” to whom I give the name Genevieve Glinch. I personally disavow every item she states!

History
I, Genevieve Glinch, a middle-aged woman, was taught that World War One happened because someone shot Archduke Ferdinand of Austria; I assume that is true.
I believe that no one, other than the Japanese, foresaw the 1941 attack on the US ships in Pearl Harbor.

I believe that US President Kennedy was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, who had already shown his disloyalty by moving to the USSR. I believe Martin Luther King was killed by a racist, James Earl Ray.

I have heard, and believe, that CIA Director William Colby died accidentally while boating on the Potomac.
I believe Australia’s Prime Minister Harry Holt died in 1967 because of bad weather at the beach where he was swimming, alone. If a newspaper, tomorrow, gives us new information about these deaths, I’ll accept that, of course.

Medicine

I trust medical science when it says that the only options for a person with cancer are surgery, radiation, and chemo. I trust the safety of vaccines for children, and I’m confident that if the AMA or the CDC makes a decision as to how many shots a child should receive, it is out of concern for the good of all. What else could it be?

I believe doctors have had to team up and start pre-paid practices, involving insurance firms, as the costs of medical care are high, due to amazing technological advances.
I believe cell phones are safe and aspartame is harmless.

I, Genevieve Glinch, believe that putting fluoride in the city water supply is good; it helps children’s teeth.
The disease known as autism seems to have increased, but I believe that may be due to better diagnosing today, rather than to such things as vaccines.

Weather
Of course Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was caused by God, and involved an additional problem, the breaking of the levees, due to the force of the water. I believe that the Christmas Eve 1975 hurricane in Australia, known as Tracy, was also caused by God.

Similarly the two tsunamis, the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 in Asia, and the March 11, 2011 tsunami in Japan were natural, as was the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, and the Victoria bushfire in Australia in 2009. (I, Genevieve Glinch, believe some blame must be placed on the lady police commissioner in Melbourne who was at her hairdresser’s with her cell phone turned off, when she should have been dealing with the fire.)

California
I believe that both Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston died from drug overdose, and that journalist Gary Webb shot himself.
The 1992 riots in Los Angeles occurred because of the anger of black people when cops were acquitted over the beating up of Rodney King.

I believe OJ Simpson killed his wife.
I don’t believe anything about mind control or any conspiracy theory. I believe prisoners volunteer for medical experiments in order to make a little money.

War
I believe our military leaders are well informed and the soldiers are very professional.
I, Genevieve Glinch, believe the war against North Vietnam was necessary, to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam.

Now that the two countries are one, things seem to have settled down. This is probably not possible for the two Koreas as the leaders of North Korea are, I believe, mentally disturbed. The leader of Libya was like that. too.

Terrorism
The biggest change in our lives occurred on September 11, 2001. Possibly it occurred before that, if you count other hijackings, mostly by Arabs. There’s a need for tight security at all airports, government offices, and courthouses. Judge Barnes was shot dead in a courtroom in Atlanta by Brian Nichols.

Terrorism is usually done by young men who have become ideological extremists. The Muslim religion calls for complete dedication to establishing Islam as the religion of all people. I, Genevieve Glinch, believe torture is sometimes the only way to get information about what these guys are planning.

Recently in Sydney, an Iranian man held 17 people hostage in a café; maybe we should take more seriously Iran’s threat of nuclear war both against Israel and against the United States. In regard to Israel bombing the people in Gaza, I believe that if only the Palestinians would stop declaring that Israel has no right to exist, it could be sorted out.

Social Issues
I, Genevieve Glinch, believe social media is so useful that it justifies the loss of privacy; I am glad we have cell phones and automatic checkout in shops. Cashiers who lost their jobs can retrain for something else.

I believe the Social Security fund might run out. The rising cost of food is worrisome, but if we get cheaper crops through genetically modified foods that will help. Science is always coming up with things.

Young people don’t seem very interested in marriage, which is quite a change from the past, but they must know what they want.
Culture is always changing. I ask: What’s next?

Comment
Now back to the critic who is writing this article.
I, Mary Maxwell, realize that Genevieve Glinch has not had the amazing opportunities I have had to correct some of my education. I also realize that her beliefs make sense in that they seem internally consistent.
Yet it is a mystery to me how she (and the majority that she typifies) go on believing things that are known to be untrue.

She says torture may be needed to obtain information. Hasn’t she heard, even on mainstream TV shows, that people undergoing torture will say what they think the torturer wants to hear? They don’t supply good information.

Might Genevieve have heard, even on mainstream news, that Congress determined that more than one person was involved in the assassination of both JFK and MLK? If so, wasn’t she aroused at least to the point of wondering what that was all about?

Regarding the CDC’s recommendations of vaccinations, there are now massive numbers of mothers pointing out that their child got brain-injured immediately after being vaccinated. Maybe Mrs Glinch herself has a neighbor with this complaint. So must she stick with trusting the CDC forever?

How is it that a middle-aged woman hasn’t been curious enough to wonder how two tsunamis could happen in the space of a few years, where she had never heard of any in her whole life until 2004?

Even in regard to the killing of Archduke Ferdinand, for which there is no popularly-touted alternative as a cause of WWI, has Mrs Glinch ever questioned the logic that such a simple event could lead to such huge involvement of armies around the world, with 20 million deaths? Wouldn’t leaders have negotiated quickly if they saw it was getting out of hand?

We in the “truth community,” so-called, are not doing too well at making converts. As I said, each and every clause in Genevieve Glinch’s credo is rejected by me. But naturally I feel that I’m the odd man out. Most often I feel that I’m a “bad girl” for opposing the status-quo thinking of my neighbors.

By the way, since I live in Australia I included some items that an Aussie Mrs Glinch might say. No one around here in Adelaide ever expresses doubt that Hurricane Tracy or the big bushfires such as the one in Victoria on 2009, were natural. But I think otherwise.

Even the (apparent to my eyes) assassination of Holt, a Prime Minster, is always described as an accidental drowning. See the amazingly naďve video:

Granted, when a person dies in unusual circumstances it’s hard to know for sure what happened, but the fact that other Australian leaders did not say “Hmm, let’s have a look” is cause to suspect that maybe everybody was thinking it but dared not say it.

Anyway, I offer the above ‘Credo’ as a baseline for anyone interested in this puzzle. Let the character Genevieve Glinch stand for a mild-mannered person -- not, say, one who writes angrily to blogs about those horrible conspiracy nutters. Oops, I don’t think citizens really do write those comments; I assume such commenters are “on the payroll.”

But there I go…. “She never stops, does she? When she’s not nine-elevening, she’s onto the mind-control stuff.” Etc, etc.
