Thanks to Donald Trump decisively winning the Electoral College while losing the popular vote, we are now seeing cries to abolish the Electoral College and elect presidents strictly based on popular vote. That's how it should be in a true Democracy, right? Perhaps so, but that is not how it should be nor how it was designed to be in the United States of America because we are NOT a democracy,

The U.S. is a Constitutionally guaranteed Republic which uses the democratic process for elections for elections other than the presidency and the Electoral College for presidential elections and for very good reasons. Strict majority rule can be quite dangerous. Our founders realized that, which is why they wrote our Constitution they way they did and which is why we have an Electoral College.

Without the Electoral College, candidates could run up huge majorities in heavily populated New York and California (as Hillary did in the last election) and essentially have the voters in those states and a few other heavily populated liberal strongholds dictate to the entire country by way of who the President was, who the cabinet and other administration member were and, oh yes, the judges appointed to the Supreme Court and circuit courts by the "democratically elected" president. .

If the last election demonstrated anything, it was how out of touch the ever-further-left Democrats had become with the vast majority of Americans outside the "left coasts". I don't know about you, but I decidely do not want liberal elites in New York and California looking down their noses at us deplorables and telling us how we should run our lives that they know so little about.

You know, I would bet every last cent I have that if Donald Trump had won the popular vote but lost in the Electoral College, the very large majority of anti-Trumpers would be singing the praises of the EC. As it was, the Electoral College enjoyed much support from the left prior to the last election because the consensus was that it was a very big obstacle to a Republican victory.

I wonder how many of those people who are now crying out to end the checks and balances of the Electoral College would dearly love to see the reinstatement of the Senate filibuster rule for selecting Supreme Court justices? (Thank you, Harry Reid!).

Ahh, the sweet smell of hypocrisy on a Saturday morning. Or is that the coffee?
