Total War: Spectacular History Animation Represents Siege Of Szigetvár In 1566 – Video!
On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the siege of Szigetvár (1566), a group of enthusiastic Hungarian historians and graphics programmers created a video about the legendary historic battle that became a symbolic event of 16th-century Hungarian history. The video is published currently only in Hungarian, hopefully English subtitles will be available in the near future.
Historic background: In 1566, Hungarian-Croatian nobleman Miklós Zrínyi (1508-1566) and his 2,500 troops were able to hold off the advancing army of 100,000 Turks led by Suleiman in the fortress of Szigetvár for an entire month. The sultan’s ultimate goal was conquering Vienna, but the month-long battle took its toll on the Ottoman army, costing them 20,000 men and in turn, the conquest. More than a century would pass before the Turks would attempt to capture Vienna again. Zrínyi and his troops put up a heroic fight, but realising that they could not hold up the Sultan’s army any longer, they galloped out of the castle on the morning of September 8 and fell heroically in battle.
Nikola Šubić Zrinski (Croatian pronunciation: [nǐkɔla ʃűbitɕ zrîːɲskiː][1]) or Zrínyi Miklós (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈzriːɲi ˈmikloːʃ]) (1508 – 7 September 1566) was a Croatian[2][3] nobleman and general in the service of the Habsburg, ban of Croatia[4] from 1542 to 1556, and member of the Zrinski noble family. He was known across Europe for his involvement with the Siege of Szigetvár and is today seen as a hero by both Hungarians and Croats.
