Years ago I came upon the full text of "Historical Origins of Health Fascism" by Stephen Davies and posted about it here at RMN.

I believe I'd found it at FORCES.org, which one might think of as a pro-smoking site - it's concerned with pushing back against anti-smoking hysteria, campaigns, and legislation that has resulted in turning those who smoke tobacco into second-class citizens.

Davies's little book was published in 1991. The text of it is no longer to be found at FORCES.org or anywhere else on searchable Internet as far as I can tell. Amazon does have the book listed but as an item "not currently available".

(Searchers please be advised, you may turn up a double handful of entries for a _different_ Stephen Davies. That one writes on different topics, including economics as I recall.)

So, why do we care? Well, according to the book, the origins of health fascism in the UK involved efforts to try to impose mandatory vaccination on the populace.

At first it was, "We need everyone to accept this inoculation - voluntarily, of course." Then it became, "You can choose not to take it and pay a small fine instead." Then it became, "You can refuse it but you won't be allowed to vote."

I think reading about that historical origin today could be generally informative for all of us and might be awakening for some.
