One day people will start over again from the ashes of the previous civilization. What stories will they tell each other about the other civilization they are remnants from? What stories will their eventual leaders tell them? Will they have learned the lessons from the mistakes of the past? Or will power and greed define their lives as well? There have been books written and movies made about a post apocalyptic world in the future. Which means that we made bad decisions or allowed those drunk on power and greed to destroy our world.

Many looked to God or benevolent ET’s to come in at the last moment to save us. But the skies were empty of anything but bombs as we looked desperately for a place of safety. Very few found such a place. Mountain tops and caves were the only places where the few could shelter. Those of us with loved ones far away had no means of communication, no way to determine if they had survived. Who could we have talked to anyway?

Our safety and future depended on a few strangers who had found the same place of refuge. Some were kind people who looked after the sick, young and ailing. But, as with every civilization, there were also those who sought to overpower and control the rest of us. It didn’t take long to sort out which group they were.

We had little food and few weapons to defend what we did have. Most food went to the young ones, our future if man was to continue on this planet. But, should our species continue? We had done our best to destroy Mother Earth. We nearly succeeded. Will our progeny behave any differently? We had very little of the things we used to take for granted. Our entire day was spent searching for food, for hand tools, for clothing or anything else useful that hadn’t already fallen into the hands of roving bands of thieves looking for the same things.

This is our possible future if we don’t wake up and create a better one. If we don’t learn to put our differences aside to create that better world. Our differences are really minor and inconsequential. Skin color, religion and political views are pretty unimportant when our survival depends on those closest to us. I watch my children caring for their children; some of my grandchildren caring for theirs. And I wonder how they would handle a world like that in the future. Have they listened to me? Are they prepared to live without modern conveniences?

Will we, the many, be able to stop the few from destroying us? Time is short. The video, a friend in Canada sent me accompanying this article might tell us how short. I hope he’s wrong.
