US military takes over Kabul airport for evacuations

U.S. Armed Forces are reportedly taking control of the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, to evacuate remaining Americans and Afghan allies as the Taliban overtakes the capital city.

The U.S. State and Defense Departments released a statement on Sunday stating that “we will have expanded our security presence to nearly 6,000 troops, with a mission focused solely on facilitating these efforts and will be taking over air traffic control.”

It added, “Tomorrow and over the coming days, we will be transferring out of the country thousands of American citizens who have been resident in Afghanistan, as well as locally employed staff of the U.S. mission in Kabul and their families and other particularly vulnerable Afghan nationals.”

Several other countries have been evacuating as well. According to Axios, some of those fleeing include, “the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Spain and Canada.”

Axios also noted, “Germany and Norway have closed their Kabul embassies altogether, while Denmark temporarily shut its diplomatic quarters in the Afghan capital. Australia’s Kabul embassy has been closed since May.”

The chaotic exit of American forces in Afghanistan has led to tremendous frustration among Americans. After 20 years of controlling the region, the Biden administration took only seven months to give up the entire operation to the Taliban.
