BATTLE FOR WORLD | April 17, 2020: And what do you know, the new drug that was being pushed as a probable effective treatment for coronavirus, news is being reported that the antiviral drug remdesivir, currently in the trial stage to treat COVID-19 coronavirus was tested on patients in Chicago, Illinois and has proven effective in reducing fever and other respiratory symptoms in under a week.

The drug remdesivir was developed by Gilead Sciences and their studies showed its effectiveness at inhibiting the growth of coronavirus that cause illnesses similar to COVID-19*, including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)* and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)*. The drug was initially developed as a potential treatment for Ebola*, but failed to treat the disease.

STAT News reports that of the 125 patients in Chicago that were given daily infusions of remdesivir, 113 of whom were experiencing severe symptoms relating to coronavirus showed effective results. And Gilead in a statement commented on the findings: “What we can say at this stage is that we look forward to data from ongoing studies becoming available.” The study will be completed by April 27 with results expected.
