Many reports about the current coronavirus "outbreak" in China suggest this "epidemic" could be likened to or perhaps even worse than the 1918 Spanish Flu, which Wikipedia describes like so:

It infected 500 million people around the world,[2] including people on remote Pacific islands and in the Arctic. Probably 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million (three to five percent of Earth's population at the time) died, making it one of the deadliest epidemics in human history.

(What do you think - did they actually run tests on 500 million people, or did a large amount of 'assuming' go into that figure?)

Interestingly, the 50 million number is being spoken of currently as "number of people under quarantine", referring to whole city populations not individually locked into isolation but forbidden from traveling beyond the borders of their cities.

However, was a tiny "wild virus" in 1918 the sole cause of the global deaths attributed to it? Perhaps not.
