"Alpert's dad was the president of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Company, and ran it straight into the ground, according to my mother. I recall the commuter trains from Stamford, CT to NYC having dime and quarter sized holes in the floor in the 60's. You could see the tracks going by."
"Alpert, a successful Boston attorney with no prior railroad experience, was employed for the period June 1, 1956 to May 31, 1961 as the railroad's Chief Executive at an annual salary of $60,000...the New Haven (RR)took refuge in the bankruptcy court in 1961...Alpert draws a very bright picture of the services he performed and the self-sacrifices he made in behalf of the New Haven (RR) when he assumed the Chief Executive's position in 1956 and during his term of office."
