The manufacturer is responsible for one million tons of harmful emissions annually
Volkswagen's admission of cheating on Eco-tests means that their 11 million cars are responsible for nearly one million tons of harmful gases more than previously thought, according to a brief analysis of the Guardian.
After last week's discovery of cheating on Echo-tests in the US, Volkswagen recalls 482,000 Audis and VWs from the American market, which were equipped with software that rigged the level of harmful emissions. According to the Guardian analysis, only those cars in the United States released between 10.392 and 41.571 tons of harmful gases into the atmosphere. If they had respected the standards of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), they should have had released only 1,039 tons of nitrogen oxides a year, with the average American mileage.
If it turns out that the Volkswagen's confession of the 11 million cars around the world are equipped with same software for cheating, they would be responsible for up to 948,691 ton of nitrogen oxides annually. By comparison, the largest power plants in western Europe, the British Drax, emits 39,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year.

Monique Goyens Director of BEUC, the European group of organizations for consumer protection, urged the European Commission to investigate the fake software on Eco-test. "Volkswagen scandal has increased our concerns about the dishonesty in the testing of fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in Europe. One of the problems is that, unlike in the US, we have no system of testing compliance with the standards in the use. The EU should develop such a system in order to regain the trust of end-users, "said Goyens.
