Oswald LeWinter, 70, reputedly former Deputy Chief for
Europe of the Central Intelligence Agency, who had been
released from an Austrian prison where he served two of
a four year sentence for attempted fraud, was found dead
at his home in Lisbon, where he had been living since the
beginning of this year. According to sources in the local
Police, no apparent cause of death could be established,
but the coroner had ruled out suicide, labelling the death
as having occurred through "mysterious circumstances".
LeWinter had been working on a book, which he had said
would reveal details of the "murder" of Princess Diana of
Wales", a claim he had made to the end. A controversial
figure, the Austrian-born ex-spy had been a thorn in the
CIA's side for many years, according to Tom Crispell,
an agency spokesman, for his attacks upon the agency
in the media. LeWinter, who had revealed highly detailed
inside knowledge of a number of key events that had taken
place since the assassination of President John F. Kennedy,
was an expert in disinformation;

Gen. Alexei Galkin, former Deputy Chief of the 11th KGB
Directorate, told Reuters in a telephone interview from Kiev,
where he lives in retirement. In 1989, LeWinter had been
convicted in Austria for attempting to sell forged CIA papers
to Mohamed al-Fayed, owner of Harrods Department Store,
purporting to tell the truth about the "murder" of Princess
Diana and Dodi al-Fayed in Paris in 1997. A source in the
Portuguese Security Service told Reuters that although there
were no signs of a break-in at his home no papers, records
or documents could be found and his computer files had been deleted.
