Iraqi double agent named as Lockerbie bomber

A ROGUE spy has identified an Iraqi agent working for British military intelligence as a new suspect in the Lockerbie bombing, a Sunday Herald investigation has revealed. The claims are made in an affidavit submitted to the High Court in London by David Greenberg, who worked with a secret arm of the British Army's Intelligence Corps. He alleges a series of crimes by British undercover army units, among which it is claimed that 'a British intelligence agent of Iraqi descent' was connected to the downing of PanAm flight 103 over Lockerbie in December 1988. The terrorist attack claimed the lives of 270 people. In February, the Libyan defendant Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was jailed for life for the crime. His co-accused, Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah, was acquitted. Megrahi is appealing the verdict.

David Greenberg -- a cover name for the former intelligence agent -- is now represented by Imran Khan, the lawyer who represented the family of the murdered black teenager, Stephen Lawrence. Khan is seeking an immediate meeting with Home Secretary Jack Straw to discuss Greenberg's claims against the Ministry of Defence. In an interview with the Sunday Herald, Greenberg claimed that an Arab businessman, Dr Ishan Barbouti, was behind the bombing. Barbouti had offices in London, Malta and Frankfurt and it is alleged that he received £3.2 million from a Libyan account. Barbouti is supposed to have died in 1990 after a heart attack. However, there have been claims that he faked his death to avoid capture and trial. Lloyd's of London, refused to pay his life insurance claim, and many believe he is still alive. He is also said to have been involved in setting up poison gas programmes for Libya and Iraq. Barbouti is suspected of having been a double agent for British intelligence and the Iraqi regime.

US judge Eileen O'Neill once ruled that ex-president George Bush could be subpoenaed during an investigation into Barbouti, who is routinely described as a 'mysterious dealmaker'. Brigadier Sebastian Roberts, the Ministry of Defence's most senior spokesman, said the MoD was aware of the affidavit. He said the document was not in the public domain, as it had been read during a secret hearing in a judge's chambers. Imran Khan, who is repres enting Greenberg, told the Sunday Herald: 'I have been approached by a number of individuals, including Mr Greenberg, and I am now acting for them.

'I want an urgent meeting with Jack Straw to discuss these men's concerns about their safety and the conduct of the military. These are serious and frightening allegations which require an immediate investigation. 'These men's claims must be acknowledged officially and the government must assure the electorate that these will be addressed. No-one seems to care about these men or the claims they are making, and the government must own up to what has been going on.' The MoD said that Greenberg's affidavit was described during the secret court hearing as 'scandalous, frivolous, and vexatious' and 'an abuse of the process of the court'.
