'National rally for tax relief' today
Congressman leads protest, concurrent events across U.S.

Weary of shouldering the burden of an income tax, citizens, activists and public policy organizations have issued a cry for relief at the "National rally for tax relief."

Led at noon today by Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., from the House Triangle on the steps on the U.S. Capitol, dozens of groups, including Americans for Tax Reform, the Heritage Foundation, Citizens for a Sound Economy, Citizens Against Government Waste and many others are spending Tax Day calling for relief from what they consider an over-burdensome income tax.

At the same time, similar rallies are being held in states across the nation. Citizens in Montana, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Florida, Maine, Ohio, Oregon and Texas are gathering for protests in their respective states.

Many groups participating in the Tax Day rallies will celebrate "Tax Freedom Day" next month. By common estimates, Americans spend an average of one-third of their income in taxes, meaning they work until about May just to pay taxes.
