German military reportedly to drop Microsoft software on espionage grounds

FRANKFURT (AFX) - The German military plans to stop using Microsoft Corp's software as part of the defence and foreign ministries' plan to take security measures to provide protection against U.S. espionage, the weekly magazine Spiegel reported without citing sources.
The magazine reported the military no longer wants to use Microsoft's software following information it received that the U.S. secret service is in possession of the complete facility for decoding the software.
Another security measure being planned is for the military to employ decoding technology only made by Siemens AG and Deutsche Telekom AG, the report said.
Concerns about U.S. espionage have led the German foreign ministry to give up plans to start employing satellite transmitted video-conferences with its embassies, the magazine reported.
