GREAT TIDBITS FROM A GOP NEWSLETTER + 800# to Cong

I normally don't post these newsletters from the GOP, but there are so many good tidbits in this one that I wanted to "share".

**************************
Activist Alert

The following was passed along to us by our friends at the National
Federation of Republican Assemblies [www.nf-ra.org]: "If you want to call
the Congress or Senate here is a toll free number. When the operator
answers just ask for the name of the Member you wish to speak to and you
will be connected to the Washington, D.C. office. (877) 762-8762, a toll
free number checked on March 9, 2001." But don't be surprised if you get

the "all circuits are busy" recording. There's a whole lotta lobbyin' in
support of and opposed to the president's tax cut goin' on these days.

**************************
Ladies & Gentlemen ... The Cankles!

"Republican -- and even some half-dozen Democratic -- male senators are
using a derisive nickname in referring to their female Democratic
colleagues: The Cankles. 'You look at Mikulski, Clinton, Feinstein, and
Murray, and they have no ankles to speak of. You put the two words calves
and ankles together, and there you go,' says a staffer of a U.S. senator."

- "The Prowler," 3/12/01

**************************
From Russia With Love

"A United Press International report quotes unnamed 'former U.S.
intelligence officials' as saying 'former Russian President Boris Yeltsin
knew about President Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky as early as
1996.' One source 'said that during the Lewinsky-Clinton affair there
occurred at least '70 hours of phone sex,' some of it from Air Force One,
and more when President Clinton was traveling to and from and visiting
Prague. 'We speculate that the Russians got it from intercepts of Air Force
One or they placed a bug in Lewinsky's apartment,' he said.'"

- OpinionJournal.com, 3/13/01

**************************
Of Idiots and Fingers

"In the wake of my Sunday column highlighting some of the more memorable
sins of former President Bill Clinton, a few readers wrote in to complain.
They labeled me a Clinton-hater, a member of a pack of dogs 'worrying a
bone.' (I sincerely hope that was a metaphor.) They called me a right-winger
and ignorant. In league with conservative newspaper publisher Richard Mellon
Scaife -- and with the Nazis, even. A lover of Hitler who seeks to elevate
former President Ronald Reagan to hero status.

"Ordinarily, I'd let the criticisms go with an e-mail or two, but not this
time. Not when the responses so perfectly illustrate my point. According to
Christopher Hitchens, the journalist whose Clinton expose book I discussed
in my column, the Chinese have a saying: 'When the finger points at the
moon, the idiot looks at the finger.' And we've never been so gripped by
motive-questioning, blame-the-messenger politics as we have during Clinton's
tenure in Washington, D.C."

- Columnist Steve Sebelius, Las Vegas Review Journal, 3/13/01

**************************
Morning In America - Part II

"President Bush II seems inspired not by his father's presidency but by
former President Ronald Reagan's White House tenure in the 1980s. ... It's
all there: the tax cut; budget cutbacks; anti-missile defense, and increase
in military strength; plans to give states more control over federal social
programs; vouchers for school options, and anti-abortion rights. ... With
Bush following the Reagan model, conservatives are having a heyday. It's
morning in America again."

- Columnist Helen Thomas, Hearst Newspapers

**************************
Going Postal

"The financially troubled U.S. Postal Service awarded $280 million in
bonuses to managers for their units' meeting performance goals last year
even though that move and others resulted in $199 million in net losses."

- Capitol Hill Blue, 3/10/01

**************************
Philly Sleaze Steak

"Former Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell admitted to us that unions often
hand-pick judicial candidates, and then make sure there's enough street
money spread around to get them elected in the expectation that the judges
will blink at union misconduct, such as the infamous 1998 beating of
anti-Clinton protesters Don and Teri Adams by Teamster thugs."

- Wall Street Journal editorial, 3/12/01

**************************
Bring Back Public Executions

"On April 19, 1995, (Timothy McVeigh) sent 168 innocent men, women, and
children to their deaths. On May 16, 2001, at the federal penitentiary in
Terre Haute, Ind., he is scheduled to be sent to his own. ... Why
*shouldn't* his execution -- indeed, every execution -- be televised? For
most of American history, murderers were executed in the open. It wasn't
until the 1930s, in a reaction to the raucous spectacles that public
hangings sometimes became, that executions were moved behind prison walls.
It would be more decorous, legislators came to feel, to put criminals to
death in private, late at night, with only a few witnesses looking on.

"But we no longer need to choose between openness and order. Television
makes it possible to execute a criminal in a setting that is secluded and
somber yet visible to millions. The public's right to know what its
government is doing -- a right that is regarded more seriously today than it
was 70 years ago -- can be honored without diminishing the awful gravity
that is appropriate to a sentence of death. And surely it is proper that we
know what our government is doing when it inflicts the most severe and
violent punishment our laws allow. When the state kills in our behalf, the
deed should not be hidden from our eyes.

" ... Justice will be done on May 16, when the man who butchered those
children is himself put to death. It is wrong that he will die in secret,
behind closed doors, as though his execution is something shameful. It
isn't. The death penalty is how a just and decent society responds to
murder. Society should be allowed to bear witness."

- Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby, 3/8/01
