In the Tarot of Aleister Crowley, the trump called the Hanged Man shows a man lying on his back, arms and legs in a rather curious position (alchemical sign?). The position is one of meditation called "the Sleep of S(h)iloam."
The card is attributed to the Hebrew letter mem, attributed to the element water. It represents the idea of Sacrifice.
Crowley believed that sacrifice in this sense was an outmoded "ritual" from the Aeon of Osiris--an archetype of the Dying God cult (Jesus, Dionysius, etc.). But Crowley also said (most of this is paraphrased from "The Book of Thoth") that if ever things got so bad that nothing else would work, then the ritual of sacrifice symbolized by The Hanged Man would be appropriate.
Most of us would agree that "things" have indeed gotten "so bad."
One appealing aspect of the ritual of the Hanged Man is its karmic cleanness. One offers only one's own life and no other--a deal between the subject and God. Contrast this with the murder of Terri Schiavo.
