I happened to catch the closing advertising credits for 'The Tavis Smiley Show' on PBS today. One of the 'supporters' was Wal-Mart, and their rhetoric included an idea that Wal-Mart "supports diversity".
"What a strange idea," I thought. What would it actually mean to support diversity? It sounds good but doesn't it actually work to perpetuate divergence through institutionally accommodating perceived differences?
It's a sort of psychological balkanization of something; the inverse image of "humanity's innate oneness".
Another way of saying "all things converge" is "the trance of distance and separateness fades, revealing that it was an illusion, all along."
We really are all in this together. :) And every recent signal event on the world stage has worked to enhance our knowing that that is so - Terri Schiavo; War in Iraq; the 2004 quake+tsunami; events of Sept 11 2001; and more.
