Taking all the Factions, and motives of greed, etc., as givens and as background to this idea, "government" _could_ help in two particular ways.

Each involves _reversing_ a "legislative end-run" that was pulled off by somebody while we weren't looking:

- Corporations originally were state chartered for _express purposes_ and generally for only the span of time required to fulfill such purpose. The legislative "end run" was in modifying what corporations could or couldn't do, so that today they can have greater "protection of rights" than accorded to any "natural person" (in our present judicial system). It would take governmental/legislative action to _reverse_ this and restore the original working definition of "corporation", and the mindset of purpose and even service associated with that limited-life definition. Can we do this now that the world has become litigious? I don't know. Worth considering, though, since it's the protection and long-lived nature of corporations that has led directly to that litigiousness.

- FDA's mandate was originally to insure "safety" of products being offered for sale to the public. But legislation (in the 1960's, I think) extended FDA's mandate to "safety and effectiveness" of products. Ever since, only "the big boys" have been able to meet FDA requirements, because only they are working with enough money to go through the expensive testing and procedures to satisfy the "effectiveness" part of the requirement - no small-pockets operator need apply. :) Government could reverse this requirement, and the door would open to smaller businesses, including both small start-up drug companies and also supplement manufacturers, in a way that would serve the public much more broadly, efficiently, and to the benefit of human health in general.
