I don't pretend to know. But I find it interesting that, during recent calamities of one sort or another (for example, Columbine, and the Heritage High shootings in Georgia), while some people "demanded action!", other people demonstrated compassion and humanity.

I noticed particularly that in the Heritage High case, which happened _after_ Columbine, hearts went out to TJ Solomon as well as to the ones who had been affected by his actions. Rather than anger and vengefulness, there was the impulse toward healing and making whole.

While the impulse to anger is usually expressed loudly and forcefully, the other is expressed rather quietly, calmly, and is therefore not as likely to generate headlines. But the good news is, anger burns itself out; compassion tends to abide once it's been called forth, and invisibly continues to work its ways long after angry headlines are gone.
