Gore denied crucial recount

Republicans believe they are in the home stretch

Florida's Supreme Court has rejected Al Gore's petition to force a key county to continue recounting presidential ballots by hand - a major setback for the Democrat's hopes of beating Republican George W Bush to the White House.

The Gore camp had hoped the Florida Supreme Court would order Miami-Dade - Florida's most populous county and a Democratic stronghold - to continue its recount.

Working by conference call as most Americans celebrated Thanksgiving Day, the seven high court justices rejected the Gore request.

But a Democrat spokesman put a brave face on the decision, saying he thought Mr Gore could still win Florida thanks to ongoing hand recounts in two other counties.

"I believe that if we have a full and fair, accurate count in Broward and Palm Beach counties, those two counties will be enough to put us over the top", Ron Klain, a member of the Democratic National Committee, told reporters.

Election officials Miami-Dade county decided on Wednesday to halt their planned recount, on the grounds that they could not complete it by Sunday as the Florida Supreme Court has demanded.

Mr Klain said the Democrats would not fight the latest Florida Supreme Court ruling in the US Supreme Court, but would challenge Miami-Dade's official result when it is certified.

Mr Klain said Al Gore would not concede defeat when Florida certifies its result, probably on Sunday night.

Meanwhile Mr Bush's Republican camp is pressing ahead with plans to ask the US federal Supreme Court to disallow all hand recounts in Florida.

It remains unclear whether the federal court will choose to become involved in the state's election battle.
