Re: Sonya Ross’ story 9/21/00 (SF Examiner) about the US State Department
Initial Report on The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial
Discrimination submitted to the United Nations.
Dear Ms. Johnson,
As per your suggestion in our conversation yesterday I am submitting the
following information:
According to Sonya Ross’s report about the US. State Department’s report to
the UN ONLY racial/ethnic groups other than European Americans are mentioned
in the report as being victims of racial animus and hate crimes. Mentioned
were the Rodney King case, Amadou Diallo, burning of synagogues, mosques and
black churches, dragging death of James Byrd Jr. in Jasper Texas, the
shooting of the Jewish Center in LA, Denny’s Rest. and Adams Mark Hotel.
But no “white” vicitms.
That is not factual.
The report does mention the US Supreme Ct. 1993 Wisconsin vs. Mitchell
case ( Part II. Section B1. paragraph 5) that affirmed the
constitutionality of hate crime penalty enhancement laws, but the did not
mention that the victim was a young white boy who was so brutally beaten that
he lay in a coma for four days in a hospital.
In an almost mirrored case in August 1999 in Jacksonville FL. 5-6 non-white
young men after seeing the picture “A Time to Kill” about a young black
girl raped by two white men and her father sought revenge by shooting both
the white men, set out to find the first white man (cracker) they came
across and beat him up. They found 50 year old mentally retarded Gregory
Griffith and beat and stomped him to death and the State AG termed the case
as being racially motivated.
I spoke to Don Shuman of the US State Department and he admitted that he knew
about the Jacksonville, FL. case and that it was not in the report. I was to
be contacted by the State Department on Monday 9/25/00. That never happened.

The report mentioned the 1997 White House Conference on Hate Crimes as part
of the US effort to curb racism. But the report failed to mentioned that
President Clinton's staff refused to allow a European American organization
to be represented at the Conference. Some racial/ethnic/religious groups had
as many as 19 different organizations at the Conference.
Out of that Conference, the Bell/Atlantic Corp. provided a grant of
$100,000 to the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR) to develop a
Web Site that would fight bigotry and racial intolerance.
In fact, the LCCR posted a report titled “Cause for Concern-Hate Crimes in
America, 1997” that does not recognize European Americans (“whites”) as
victims of racial animus or hate crimes. The report was funded by the Levi
Strauss Foundation. Repeated efforts to the White House resulted in the LCCR
posting, in essense the following: whites commit hate crimes out of
racism--”minotites” commit hate crime against whites as a response to past
oppression. That is not an appropriate response.
The US report mentioned President Clinton’s Initiative on Race that was
supposed to open dialogue between all the racial/ethnic/religious groups in
America. In fact, the President’s Staff refused allow our organization to
present a “white paper” as they did for all other racial/ethnic groups.
The Presidents staff also refused to grant us a seat at the table when they
were in San Jose, Ca. where decisions were made regarding America’s poor.
All other major racial/ethnic groups were provided a seat at the table. Over
40% of America’s poor are European Americans and they were not represented.
This report by the US State Department to the United Nations is seriously
flawed and the American public has a right to know about it. Please report
this information to the public. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Louis Calabro
President
