I can only offer a guess as far as your question goes. More than likely Italy is moving in the direction of other former democracies such as the United States. The middle class are better educated than the professional soldier, usually. As a consequence of this, they are more nationalistic and more apt to disagree with military policy.
The professional soldier will be more inclined to follow orders when he is asked to sign a form agreeing to fire on his own countryman in the event of civil disturbance. He will generally be less well-off economically and more tied to the military as a consequence.
When he is told to discard the uniform and flag of his own country and be loyal to the EU or the NWO, he will probably lack the political savvy to understand it all and will probably just follow orders, at least that is what they will be banking on.
When told to invade the former Yugoslavia or join the U.N. in their inevitable push to take Arab oil and defend Israel, he will probably comply more readily than a cross-section of Italian society would be willing to do.
