I was on vacation in summer 2003 in San Francisco. As I was looking for
a parking spot in the city I was remarking to my girlfriend that the
design of the TransAmerica building seems a bit whimsical for such high
priced real-estate. The floors get smaller as the building rises. The
building must have a purpose beyond mere office space, I said.
I parked my car in front of this unassuming rowhouse (I forget the
street name but there is a fantastic Chinese restaurant across the
street) and looked up to see the historical marker on the facade saying
"Birthplace of Freemasonry in California". (lower right of photo) Then
I looked up to see the TransAmerica building looming overhead, which I
then saw to be a massive architectural representation of the "divider
and square" symbol of Freemasonry.
Despite the shadow covering the rowhouse and the weird wide angle I
managed to get it all in one frame... maybe this symbolism is obvious to
many but a picture is worth a thousand words.
...feel free to use this photo and message as you will - if you post it
you might want to magnify the historical marker in an inset for clarity.
