SAC BEE RAN STORY ON RMNEWS -- 11-99 (just found) Posted By: Rayelan
For all the government conspiracies circulating -- JFK's assassination,
But, as the bumper sticker says, the government hates competition. Consider the case of Rumor Mill News Agency, a site devoted to, of all sins, solving those same conspiracies everyone so boldly talks about. Rumor Mill News had a few ideas about New Year's Eve on Times Square and how widespread panic might
cause the New York Police Department to call in the feds. This, of course, becomes the reasoning for some government operatives to cause panic in the crowd and set into motion a chain of events culminating in federal control of Manhattan Island. Wired News reported Wednesday about Rumor Mill News Agency getting a call from the FBI, which gently and kindly asked site author Mike Zieper to remove a RealPlayer movie of a "training film," which features a would-be federal operative in a heavy New York accent pointing out some key staging areas and landmarks -- Virgin Megastore, MTV and the like. Turning the G-Men down, Zieper later found himself at the wrong end of his ISP, which evidently yanked the site for a period, saying it didn't want to risk a federal investigation. So, by the mighty power of the mirror server, the Zieper film has been spreading across the Net. Rumour Mill News Agency still has a transcript of the film. The Feds' take? Quoted in the Wired News story, the official line is that people making travel plans to New York were reconsidering. Of course, Webby would love for everyone to reconsider the wisdom of a Times Square New Year's Eve -- the film just seems quite incidental. Be sure to check out Rumor Mills' latest links which suggest much is going on outside the public eye. True? Probably not. But that doesn't make it less fun to look in. -- Nathan L. Walls, sacbee
