THE WEN HO LEE CASE -- A NATIONAL EMBARASSMENT -- A Collection of Articles
"This is going to be worse than a returning prisoner of war," says Phyllis Hedges, an acquaintance of the Lee family and a Los Alamos attorney.
"A prisoner of war wouldn't be in the public eye for so long, and wouldn't have suffered this volatile trauma."
A NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT
September 14, 2000
A federal judge sentenced Wen Ho Lee to time served Wednesday, ending the
scientist's incarceration after 278 days.
It should have been the federal government on the docket.
U.S. District Judge James Parker, who has presided over the case, lambasted
the government for "the unfair manner" in which it treated Lee. The
Departments of Justice and Energy, the judge declared, "have embarrassed our
nation and each of us who is a citizen of it."
Yes, they have.

Wen Ho Lee celebrated at home with family and friends hours after he was set
free with an apology from a judge who said the former Los Alamos scientist
had been "terribly wronged."
Lee's release under a plea deal Wednesday came nine months after he was put
in solitary confinement and branded a threat to national security.

Clinton 'Troubled' at Way Wen Ho Lee Was Treated

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Clinton said on Thursday he was troubled at
the way federal prosecutors blocked bail for months for Los Alamos nuclear
scientist Wen Ho Lee.
"I always had reservations about the claims that were being made denying him
bail," Clinton told reporters during an appearance on the White House South
Lawn.
"All of a sudden they reach a plea agreement which will, if anything, make
his alleged offense look modest compared to the claims that were made
against him. So the whole thing was quite troubling to me," Clinton said.

Sep. 14 -
Wen Ho Lee may finally be free, but his ordeal is far from over.
Though highly educated and a qualified nuclear scientist, and though he
has been exonerated of virtually all the charges levied against him in a
government investigation into alleged spying of U.S. nuclear secrets for
China, he is shadowed by the questions posed over his trustworthiness.
He must now deal with the legacy of months in the public eye, the loss
of his job at one of the most prominent research laboratories in the
country, and a felony conviction on his record for life.
"This is going to be worse than a returning prisoner of war," says
Phyllis Hedges, an acquaintance of the Lee family and a Los Alamos attorney.
"A prisoner of war wouldn't be in the public eye for so long, and wouldn't
have suffered this volatile trauma."
Legal Debt, Dim Job Prospects
Lee, 60, "can be in real trouble because of his age," said Kent Dedrick, a
former physicist involved with the Wen Ho Lee defense fund, and may find it
hard to get a new job.
