A reader sent the following comment and the account of the Airbus as it appeared on a Boeing Webpage --

I read the story about the A310 and I wish I could tell you whether
passenger jets in general can glide. My guess is that they might be able to for short distances.

The story was reported on Boeing's internal site and the term "glided" was in quotes.

A310 crash-lands in Vienna

An Airbus A310 with 150 people aboard ran out of fuel Wednesday and
crash-landed at Vienna's Schwechat Airport, slightly injuring 27 people,
according to the Associated Press, quoting Austrian media sources.

The plane "glided" toward the rough landing with the engines turned off, but the
force of impact ripped off an engine and badly damaged one wing. After
touching down just short of the runway, passengers were evacuated by slipping
down emergency slides.

The chartered plane was traveling from Crete to Hanover, Germany. It was carrying 142 passengers and eight crew.

The pilot reported that the plane's engines had stopped functioning, said Heinz the cause of the accident was still unclear, Sommerbauer said the fuel troubles apparently stemmed from some sort of technical defect.

Ten of the 27 injured people were hospitalized, doctors said. Most of the injuries were slight.
