The NYPD, deploying the biggest security force in its history, will be on a massive terror watch during the city's millennium July Fourth bash - even as threats forced the cancellation of events at two U.S. embassies. Police officials said extra police have been ordered on city streets - mainly because this year's daytime and nighttime celebrations are more extensive than normal, with three fireworks displays and OpSail 2000.

In all, 28,800 cops will report to work - more than any day in the city's history.

Specifically, 12,000 will monitor OpSail and the fireworks displays.

For the millennium bash on New Year's Eve, fewer than 20,000 cops were assigned - at the time, the largest force ever deployed for an event.

Cops have been ordered to be extra vigilant for the Fourth, especially at so-called terrorist "trophy spots," like bridges, tunnels, courthouses and prominent houses of worship.

The city's precautions come amid an increasingly tense climate around the globe.

U.S. intelligence agencies have been receiving what one official said was "credible evidence" that Saudi extremist Osama bin Laden and his supporters are looking for opportunities to stage a high profile attack on American targets overseas.

Earlier this week the State Department issued an advisory that warned Americans traveling abroad this summer to take extra precautions.

The security jitters from bin Laden's ongoing millennium threats forced the U.S. Embassy in Brussels and its mission to NATO to call off a big street fair which 1,500 guests, including the king and queen of Belgium, were scheduled to attend.

The U.S. Embassy in Jordan also canceled its annual July 4th bash because of continued threats from bin Laden's organization, the State Department said.

The cancellations came after American missions overseas were alerted to possible threats earlier this month, and ordered to undertake "a careful review of current security situations, and to take appropriate precautions with respect to the July 4th celebrations."

"Brussels was planning this street party and, given the particular security situation, the decision was that this year they would not proceed," the spokesman said.

Bin Laden, the multi-millionaire Saudi exile who runs a worldwide terrorist network from a mountain hideout in Afghanistan, has been indicted for the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Earlier this year, security at the nation's big millennium bashes, including New York's, was dramatically beefed up after authorities busted several members of a network of suspected Algerian terrorists trying to enter the country from Canada for possible terrorist attacks in Seattle and New York.

A second plot to attack tourists and pilgrims in Jordan on New Year's Eve was also uncovered, and several members arrested.

Over the past few months, bin Laden - who is believed to be gravely ill - is thought to have been concentrating his resources on helping Islamic fighters in Chechnya and Kashmir.
