I've been an avid organic gardener for 18 yrs. In addition to the produce, I also maintain an organic closed water garden from which I harvest 150 + pounds of fish each year. No feed or chemicals are added to the system and the water garden capacity is only 3000 gallons of water. Such a closed system is considered impossible by standard fish farmers. I find both my gardens' yields and qualities are very high. ..Actually my greatest concern with mass produced farm goods for the general public is not the question of organic or inorganic. My concern is regarding the nature of mass produced food and the routes/distance/waste involved in transporting it to large segments of the population. The travel distance is inefficient considering the resources involved. Our society must come to terms with current means of food distribution. We need to exploit our ability to produce healthy food within a shorter radius of it's consumption. More food suffers waste involved in the current cycle of transportation and spoilage than does from insects and disease. Take a look at the trash dumpsters behind grocery stores ( if allowed ) You will be appalled at the waste.Large quantities of food can be produced closer to its point of cosumption. Our current methods are a product of an outdated Dept. of Agriculture and a legacy of cheap petroleum products. It is time to wake up and smell the proverbial coffee or in my own case herbal tea. Check out a book on French Intensive Gardening methods and alternative meat production methods. The means to change the current situation is within our grasp..........
