Say He Almost Didn’t Do It, But a Voice Urged Him on

R O M E, May 16 — The man who shot Pope John Paul the Second says he nearly walked away that day without pulling the trigger.

Mehmet Ali Agca was interviewed by Italian TV following the Vatican’s revelation that the so-called third secret of Fatima was a vision of the 1981 assassination attempt.

Voices Made Him Do It

Agca says he remembers that John Paul had done his first swing through St. Peter’s Square and that he had his back to him. At that point, Agca says he was thinking that he would walk away and go to Switzerland, because he refused to shoot a man in the back.

But then Agca says he heard applause, and then John Paul was just 50 yards away. He says something was dragging him back, and that he heard a voice that said “You must do it. You must do it.”

Agca says he fired the gun after the pope had just finished holding a blond curly-haired toddler.
