The timing of this "trade mission" is suspicious. George W. Bush is Governor of Texas. His father, the former CIA Director and President was part of the Bay of Pigs operation. Jeb Bush is Governor of Florida -- where Little Havana might erupt any minute.

This trip smells like a Bush family offering to Fidel to "call it off" and let Elian's entire family go -- Let's see how this unfolds -- If Castro cuts a deal with the Bush family - G.W. will be the next President.

Texas farm trade mission to Cuba

WACO, Texas, April 21 (UPI) - A delegation of Texas farmers and ranchers will travel to Cuba Monday on a trade mission to identify future markets for their products in case the U.S. trade embargo is lifted.

Donald Patman, president of the Texas Farm Bureau, will lead the group, which will include 11 farmers and ranchers who are members of the TFB board, as well as Rep. Charles Stenholm, D-Texas, a ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee.

"We feel that it's appropriate that we follow up our trade mission of last September by continuing to identify the persons with which we can trade when the U.S. embargo is eventually lifted," Patman said.

Under the U.S. trade embargo of Cuba, the island nation is buying about $1 billion in agricultural products, most of them from Southeast Asia and Europe, according to the Farm Bureau.

Patman, a grain, cotton and cattle producer, said the embargo is having no effect in destabilizing the Communist government in Cuba and it's time for it to end.

"We know Cuba would like to buy from the U.S. and the ports of Houston and Beaumont (in Texas) are only six days from Havana," he said. "We feel that Texas can strongly compete for that market."

An amendment to the Agricultural Appropriations bill that would have removed the Cuban sanctions on food and medicine passed the Senate last year but failed in the House.

"We believe we had the votes to pass it and there is still overwhelming sentiment in the country that this embargo long ago outlived any effectiveness it might have had," Patman said.

The Texas Farm Bureau leader believes powerful Cuban-American interests have kept the embargo in effect, but its days are now numbered.

"Using food as a weapon of diplomacy almost never works," Patman said. "We have always believed that American food should be used to promote peace and prosperity among nations. We have a marvelous opportunity in Cuba."

The Texas delegation will meet with officials of the Cuban Agriculture Ministry, Alimport (the government agency responsible for importing food), the Ministry of Foreign Trade, The Cuban National Bank and the U.S. Interest Section for Cuba.

The group will also tour cooperative farms and meet with the head of the Cuban National Assembly, Ricardo Alarcon.
