Protestors call for Giuliani's resignation

NEW YORK, April 20 (UPI) -- Hundreds of protesters in New York City marched from Brooklyn to city hall in Manhattan Thursday calling for the resignation of the mayor Rudolph Giuliani for his defense of the New York Police Department officers who had allegedly shot down three unarmed black men.

"Amadou Diallo, Patrick Dorismond, Malcolm Ferguson," was chanted by the protesters, naming three black men fatally shot by New York Police Department officers.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who was not at the Thursday demonstration, had organized a week-long series of protests in New York against Republican Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and the alleged police brutality of the New York Police Department.

Sharpton was at a speaking engagement out of town, but he participated in protests earlier in the week.

Sharpton wanted the demonstrations to put pressure on the U.S. Justice Department to prosecute the four police officers indicted and found not guilty of 24 charges ranging from murder to reckless endangerment in the shooting death of African immigrant Amadou Diallo.

"We're going back to the streets," Sharpton said earlier this month. "It's necessary to put pressure on the federal government."

Dorismond and Ferguson were fatally shot by police officers in undercover drug stings last month. None of the men shot by police were armed.

The civil rights activist also called on the New Yorkers to not buy Easter outfits and other holiday supplies as a boycott that life should not remain as usual in the light of what he describes as the police practice of "racial profiling and police brutality."

While the protests have been focused toward the federal government most of the signs and the chants centered on Mayor Giuliani who has been a strong supporter of the police in each of the shooting deaths.

The mayor has been criticized for not meeting with the shooting victims' family and for releasing the sealed juvenile police arrest record of Dorismond.

Many of the signs showed the mayor with a short mustache like Adolf Hitler and many shouted "Giuliani the new Hitler."

"The demonstration was peaceful and no arrests were made," a spokesman for the New York Police Department told United Press International.

Giuliani is expected to be the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in New York against Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Sharpton has said he is also planning a rally against racial profiling on the 37th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 28.
