First Reno canceled a major conference due to Elian -- and now Gore cancels

his first news conference in two months. While this may only be a

coincidence

Gore cancels news conference, cites Elian case

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore

dropped

plans Thursday to hold what would have been his first news conference in

nearly two months.

A spokesman said the vice president did not want to be pulled into the

fast-folding custody battle over 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez.

"The situation in Florida is volatile that we don't want to be dragged into

it," said Gore press aide Doug Hattaway, referring to the standoff between

the federal government and relatives of the Cuban boy over where he will

live.

As one Gore aide put it, "We don't want to say anything that could be

misinterpreted."

The vice president, who has been criticized for not holding a news

conference

since Feb. 19, has already been accused of sending mixed messages on what

should be done with the young shipwreck survivor.

Gore recently broke with President Clinton in saying the youngster should be

given permanent residency status in the United States so the case could be

transferred from the Immigration and Naturalization Service, which has ruled

he should be returned to his father.

Earlier this week, though, Gore suggested that the battle be resolved by the

boy's father and his relatives in Florida.

Asked Thursday if Gore had already been dragged into the case, Hattaway

said,

"He has made his position clear."
