Graf, You are close to the money with your question regarding Montauk. There have long been rumors of exotic, "futuristic", type weapons being tested at Montauk -- an excellent series exploring this subject is "Phoenix Undead" by John Quinn (yup, I know I've knocked him upside the head on this list before, but I try to give credit where it's due). Mr. Quinn is very familiar with the area and has looked into the various rumors/facts surrounding it in depth. This weaponry was speculated to have been involved in the crash of TWA800 off the coast there.

Earlier this year, at about the same time JFK,Jr.'s flight went down in that very same area, Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) tested its Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). This received media attention when many scientists voiced their concern regarding experimentation with a weapon they felt could result in a black hole that could cause destruction of the earth. And now we have the Egyptian Air down in roughly the same area... There have long been rumors of vast underground tunnels connecting Montauk and BNL and stories persist of BNL's cooperation with the more secretive elements of the military industrial complex that runs the show here in the U.S.

How does this all tie together in the "big picture"? Well, I guess we have to wait and see who steps forward to "spin" this story to their benefit; to promote their agenda. Also, as always, there's that old adage, "follow the money" -- a little more time might reveal much to those of us looking close enough. That and, hopefully, Raye's sources!!!
