CIA Manipulated Media Mucho

Sam Smith's Progressive Review reports that

the CIA played a significant role

domestically, manipulating media outlets and

influencing cultural institutions.

Smith details the agency's role, as

recounted in a forthcoming book, "The

Cultural Cold War," by Frances Stonor

Saunders.

Smith cites the revelations and claims made

by Saunders:

* In George Orwell's "Animal Farm," the

animals eventually are unable to tell the

difference between two sets of tyrants, the

pigs and the farmers. The CIA bought the

film rights from Orwell's widow, then

changed the ending of the movie so that only

the authoritarian pigs and not the

capitalist farmers were left. H. Howard Hunt
