Condit's hometown newspaper calls for his resignation

Rep. Gary Condit has embarrassed his district and should resign for lying about an affair with missing intern Chandra Levy, his hometown newspaper argued in an editorial.

Aides to the California congressman dismissed the editorial as a partisan attack from a longtime critic.

The Ceres Courier Editor Jeff Benziger wrote: "Condit has badly damaged the trust his constituents have placed in him."

The weekly newspaper said Wednesday that Condit, a Democrat, should take a page from the playbook of his predecessor, Tony Coelho, who resigned in 1989 amid a junk bond scandal.

Condit aide Michael Dayton said Thursday that the paper often opposes Condit and previously called for his resignation in 1998 for voting against President Clinton's impeachment.

"This is another partisan attack," Dayton said.

Other newspapers in California have criticized Condit's actions in the Levy case, but none has specifically called for him to resign.

Levy, 24, vanished May 1 in Washington. She had been an intern at the Bureau of Prisons and was planning to return home to California.

Her family members have said Levy was having an affair with Condit. He confirmed the affair in his third interview with investigators, according to a police source.

Police have said Condit is not a suspect in her disappearance.

Condit, in California while Congress is on break, has not commented publicly on his relationship with Levy other than to release a statement calling her a "good friend."
