QUANTUM FLUCTUATION IN THE GLOBAL BRAIN - COSMOS A "FIELD OF INFORMATION"
In a recent post Susoni brought forth an article from Discover magazine that delves into the exotica of information transmission as observed in the realm of quantum physics. The concept is defined on the respective wiki page titled Quantum Fluctuation:
"In quantum physics, a quantum fluctuation is the temporary change in the amount of energy in a point in space, arising from Werner Heisenberg's uncertainty principle."
Very soon the language provided veers into theoretical abstractions that are (at best) difficult to connect with anything from the world of reality described by the five physical senses.
Susoni cited the Discover article:
Science's weirdest realm may be responsible for photosynthesis, our sense of smell, and even consciousness itself.
The idea seems to be that information is somehow encoded and transmitted at the minutest scale on or in sub-atomic particles:
Physicists describe quantum reality in an equation they call the wave function, which reflects all the potential ways a system can evolve. Until a scientist measures the system, a particle exists in its multitude of locations. But at the time of measurement, the particle has to “choose” just a single spot. At that point, quantum physicists say, probability narrows to a single outcome and the wave function “collapses,” sending ripples of certainty through space-time. Imposing certainty on one particle could alter the characteristics of any others it has been connected with, even if those particles are now light-years away. (This process of influence at a distance is what physicists call entanglement.) As in a game of dominoes, alteration of one particle affects the next one, and so on.

The implications of all this are mind-bending. In the macro world, a ball never spontaneously shoots itself over a wall. In the quantum world, though, an electron in one biomolecule might hop to a second biomolecule, even though classical laws of physics hold that the electrons are too tightly bound to leave. The phenomenon of hopping across seemingly forbidden gaps is called quantum tunneling.
From tunneling to entanglement, the special properties of the quantum realm allow events to unfold at speeds and efficiencies that would be unachievable with classical physics alone. Could quantum mechanisms be driving some of the most elegant and inexplicable processes of life?
The article mentions the application of chemistry in switching the on-off state of waking awareness:
Stuart Hameroff, an anesthesiologist and director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona, argues that the highest function of life —consciousness— is likely a quantum phenomenon too. This is illustrated, he says, through anesthetics. The brain of a patient under anesthesia continues to operate actively, but without a conscious mind at work. What enables anesthetics such as xenon or isoflurane gas to switch off the conscious mind?
"Fluctuation" may be less familiar than "Shift" as a term that clarifies the meaning of "Quantum". We get some provocative ideas about how quantum dynamics might function in human awareness in the 1989 movie Quantum Leap. IMDB plot summary:
Doctor Sam Beckett led a group of top scientists into the desert to research his theory that a man could time travel within his own lifetime. Unfortunately, in order to save his funding, he was forced to enter the accelerator prematurely and vanished. He then found himself in someone else's body with partial amnesia.
Extrapolating just a little, we can see the possibility suggested that human dna might incline each locator-point of Intelligent Universe (focusing in each Ego) to "experience" the experience of other "locators". It looks like well-funded scientists are deeply interested in human EMPATHY.
A further useful hint may be found in the title of the Discover article about the scientific inquiry: "Is Quantum Mechanics Controlling Your Thoughts?"
What drives the deep pockets quest to reduce the processes of consciousness (Noetic Function) to a mathematical formula?
Back to the future, back to the 1989 movie Quantum Leap...
"Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Dr. Beckett prematurely stepped into the project accelerator... and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own."
John Murdoch awakens alone in a strange hotel to find that he has lost his memory and is wanted for a series of brutal and bizarre murders. While trying to piece together his past, he stumbles upon a fiendish underworld controlled by a group of beings known as The Strangers who possess the ability to put people to sleep and alter the city and its inhabitants. Now Murdoch must find a way to stop them before they take control of his mind and destroy him.
John's life has become a nightmare. He is hunted by the police for a series of murders he knows nothing about, a woman who claims to be his wife is after him, and so is a mysterious "doctor". But his worst trouble is the strangers, a series of vastly powerful beings who seem to manipulate just about everything in the city, and want him because of the extraordinary powers he manifested. John decides to find out what is happening in his city; why is it always night? And why can nobody tell him a way to leave the city?
It isn't hard to see why Dominator Culture would fund research into the dynamics behind the display of UNITY in human groups.
A similar motivation is seen driving activity in the field of "politics". Applied "Political Science" has effectively prevented "unity-behavior" via covert Hegelian "divide and conquer" strategies.
Rather than dwelling on the likely sinister approaches to the study of consciousness, it's much more fun to study the implications of visionaries who have looked into what can usefully be called Noetic Function. Using other terminology, a composer-pianist-scientist born in Budapest in 1932 shared his discoveries in a 2004 book:
Among the Amazon Editorials of Science and the Akashic Field Stanislav Grof lavishes praise upon the author: "“Arguably the world’s greatest system theorist and interdisciplinary scientist and philosopher, Ervin Laszlo is a multifaceted individual with a range of interests and talents reminiscent of the great figures of the Renaissance. In an intellectual tour de force and a series of books, Laszlo offers a solution to the current paradoxes in Western science that transcends the boundaries of individual disciplines.”
Wikipedia: In 1984, he was co-founder [...] of the initially secret General Evolutionary Research Group. Meeting behind the Iron Curtain, the group of scientists and thinkers from a variety of disciplines met in secret. Given the mounting threat to the human species caused by rapid proliferation of nuclear weapons and potential overkill, their goal was to explore whether it might be possible to use the chaos theory to identify a new general theory of evolution that might serve as a path to a better world.
In 1993, in response to his experience with the Club of Rome, he founded the Club of Budapest to, in his words, "center attention on the evolution of human values and consciousness as the crucial factors in changing course — from a race toward degradation, polarization, and disaster to a rethinking of values and priorities so as to navigate today's transformation in the direction of humanism, ethics, and global sustainability".
Another observer:
Once the domain of Indian mysticism, the Akashic Record has become the basis of modern field theory. In his book, Science and the Akashic Field: An Integral Theory of Everything (Rochester, Vermont: Inner Traditions, 2004), Ervin Laszlo claims that the Akashic Record is the mythological equivalent of the zero-point field that permeates space. Science and Mysticism meet in his "rediscovery" of the A-Field which points to the existence of a Metaverse, a "vaster, more fundamental universe behind and beyond the universe" known to man. This A-Field is an informed source universe active in all domains of life, from cells to galaxies, human to cosmic consciousness.
Recently, by Ervin Laszlo (Inner Tradtions, March 2008):
On January 19th PhysOrg.com chimed in with a highly revelatory post touching on many important facets of Noetic Function in the transmission of information in ways that are not possible in conventional theory. Excerpts:
Conventional wisdom, when applied to quantum communication, seems to say that one must have a private channel in order to communicate privately. Nonprivate channels, the thinking goes, should not be able to send quantum information. It is this very thinking that Smith, along with colleague John Smolin, at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, could be overturning. In theory, and with the help of some mathematical equations, Smith and Smolin show that it might be possible to combine nonprivate channels to create a channel that would transmit quantum information - and communicate privately at greater distances than currently possible. Their reasoning can be found in Physical Review Letters: "Can Nonprivate Channels Transmit Quantum Information?"
snip
"There are these features that allow the sum of the nonprivate channels to interact with each other in a synergestic way to become useful. Interestingly, this is not something that happens classically. But it could happen with quantum information channels."
Smith says that even though individually these channels might look weak, when they are put together, it is possible that they would have the ability to carry more quantum information than the sum of their individual capacities combined. "In our paper, we are presenting ideas of how to design protocols that allow higher rates of quantum communication, over longer distances, than what we can currently do right now."
Even though this method of quantum communication looks promising, Smith admits that not all of the components are properly understood. Like so much in quantum mechanics, it appears that something could or does happen, but the why isn’t always easy to grasp. "Right now," he says, "we’re trying to better understand the individual resources, and some of their bounds. We are trying to develop a way to quantify what the resources actually are. We’re starting to develop a feel for what different classes of channels might be made of, but we don’t have good characterization yet."
Part of understanding characterization, and quantifying the components of quantum communication, Smith continues, is the idea of figuring out the why behind this phenomenon. "We have information that shows that some of these nonprivate channels are useless for quantum communication, but when you combine them, they are quite useful. Why is this?"
"There is something strange going on here. But if we can get to the bottom of it, we should be able to improve upon our ability with quantum communication dramatically."
This line of inquiry eventually leads to a thoroughly detailed discovery that humans are creation engines, dna-endowed with the capability (via "fragment-to-totality" relatedness) to directly modify forms in physical substance. This solves many puzzles... why the long campaign to gain "full control" over Earth Humanity... why Egypt never displayed an interval of advance... why "nano-war"...
Among those who have not anchored Soul Awareness (classically, accomplished through "suffering"), the substitute for RELATEDNESS? CONTRACTS. ("Bondage or Relatedness?")
In order to objectively deal with implications of "Quantum Fluctuation" we must develop the volitional capacity to quell trigger-reactions, and thus to handle information charged with a high potential for polarization. Otherwise, the information "handles" us.
Dealing with information that potentially is highly polarizing...
