CAN ROBERT GATES TAKE ACTION ON BEHALF OF LEO WANTA ??
CIA's image ... had been badly battered, especially by the revelation that it had withheld documents [ in the matter of the August, 1989 raid on the Banco Nazionale Lavoro branch in Atlanta ]. Gates remained strangely unwilling to defend the Agency's actions. The whole Iraq-Gate affair had stricken Langley, like the White House, with a kind of paralysis.
Gates might have publically disclosed that the FBI raid had threatened CIA-MI6 operations against Iraq's bomb, and that CIA had a right to prevent this from happening. He might have said that, just as police allow undercover agents to engage in illicit activities to protect their covers, and offer immunity to collaborators for purposes of rolling up large criminal empires, so, too, intelligence services have the right -- indeed, the duty -- to potect sources and methods that could save millions of lives from nuclear death, even where this means not providing full support for criminal prosecutions.
But Gates did not say anything of the sort, nor could he have. The very real possibility of Iraqi retaliation against Western agents -- including MI6 moles like Paul Henderson -- limited CIA's ability to extricate itself from the Iraq-Gate scandal, and prove its continuing relevance after the demise of the USSR, by admitting its penetration of Saddam's nuclear program. Gates also knew that some of Iraq's nuclear-related equipment remained hidden, and calculated that Matrix-BNL intelligence must be guarded jealously for possible use in future U.S. attacks.
The wisdom of that policy was proved on January 17. 1993, when U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf launched forty-five Tomahawk missiles at the Zaafraynia nuclear facility, near Baghdad, destroying nuclear lathes that had been made by Matrix-Churchill, pqid for by the Atlanta branch of BNL.

THE NEW SECRETARY OF DEFENSE WAS DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF THE CIA
Robert Gates has been sworn in as the new Secretary of Defense, placing this long-time associate of former President George H.W. Bush, Brent Scowcroft and James Baker III in one of the most sensitive and important positions in the federal government. Mr. Gates was Deputy Director of the CIA in 1988, and a key member of the Consortium for the Study of Intelligence, a group formed to facilitate the exchange of counter-intelligence information between the Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI ) and the CIA. He was later a key assistant to Brent Scowcroft, and then promoted to Director of Central Intelligence by former President Bush, confirmed by the U.S. Senate and sworn in on November 12, 1991. He served in that capacity until late in January of 1993, or after the cruise missile attack on the Iraqi nuclear facility at Zaafraynia.
Like so many other attempts to ease the frictions and outright hostility between the FBI and CIA, the Consortium's work was done earnestly and in good faith, and endorsed by both National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft and then-Senator David Boren of Oklahoma, chairman of the Senate Intelligence committee. And it was apparently then ignored and allowed to languish, so that conflicts over counter-intelligence between the Bureau and the Agency simply continued ... unabated. That Secretary Gates remains close to David L. Boren, Yale College 1963, is a fact. Now president of Oklahoma University, Boren was at Gates' side when he testified before the Senate during his confirmation hearings.
SECRETARY GATES IS THE INSIDER'S INSIDER
Given his close and personal relationships with George H.W. Bush and both Scowcroft and Baker, and his position in the CIA, it is impossible to imagine that Robert Gates did not know of the banking panic which followed the FBI/Department of Justice raid on the Atlanta branch of BNL, in August of 1989. It is highly improbable that he did not know that many of the billions of dollars transferred out of Spain and into the United States in the days following that raid were moved out of accounts controlled by or known to Leo Wanta.
It is laughable to think that an "intelligence insider" like Gates was not fully aware of the international transit of those funds, over several days, into U.S. banking or trust accounts in New York, California, Texas and Tennessee. After all, Gates was not just some lower-echelon pencil pilot, he was the DDCI !!
Secretary Gates takes over the first chair at the Department of Defense at a time when "the Army" itself has been badly damaged, by the Rumsfeld doctrine of fighting 'on the cheap', and when both Russia and China are growing increasingly hostile to the United States. It is evident that the delegation of U.S. cabinet secretaries and other officials led by Henry Paulson, "Secretary" of the Treasury, and Ben Bernanke of the criminal Federal Reserve, went to China on a fools' errand and came home with a new assortment of dunce caps for all to wear.
The Putin government of Russia has just parleyed a power-play against the oil giant Royal Dutch Shell, seeking to force them out of their key role in developing a natural gas field, and the Marxist Chinese know very well that Paulson ( of Goldman, Sachs, previously ), has been blocking the payments claimed by Leo Wanta from funds accumulated in the long struggle against the old Soviet regime. Whether the numbers on those funds are $ 4.5 Trillion or 27.5 Trillion, the reporting of Christopher Story, of the International Currency Review and worldreports.org has kept readers on both sides of the Atlantic pond aware and up-to-date on the Wanta problem.
IS GATES A TRUE AMERICAN PATRIOT OR ANOTHER BUSH FACTOTUM ??
The new Secretary of Defense faces some incredibly serious problems, with an over-extended army operating in both Afghanistan and Iraq, and inscrutable threats still coming from communist North Korea. More than 140,000 U.S. troops are inside of Iraq, and the three years of occupation there have cost us nearly 3,000 servicemen and -women killed, with another 20,000 wounded, injured or sickened. The equipment sent to Iraq is wearing out, both from constant use in patrols and operations, and because machines wear down quickly in the desert climate of Mesopotamia. New Humvees, trucks, helicopters and so forth cost money -- a lot of taxpayers' money -- and the new Secretary must know by now how dire the situation is. Some new tax revenues might make his job a lot easier, and in a big hurry, if they arrived soon. Like now.
It could be said, without too much embellishment, that in blocking the transfer payments to Leo Wanta, Secretary Paulson is "giving aid and comfort" to Al Qaeda in Iraq and the resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan. That would clearly make him liable for charges of Treason, under the Constitution ( if anybody still reads that old scrap of paper ).
The truth of the matter is clear: no matter what connections Robert Gates has, and has had in the past, no matter how close he is to President Bush the elder, and Baker "the fixer," he is now the man entrusted with our country's "Big Stick." If he really loves his country more than his membership in the barking dogs club of Bush, Baker and Boren, he should move heaven and earth and all parts in between to get the Wanta funds paid in full. And just for chuckles, not paid in tissue-thin Federal Reserve Notes.
The Durham Trust has communicated its intentions and its pledge of good faith to U.S. Senators, the current president, friends of the Bush family in Saudi Arabia, and to banking families of long-standing who are still resident in China. V.K. Durham has let Leo Wanta and his associates know that she is willing to be a participant in "the working out of details" which will enable the Wanta funds to be repatriated and paid out -- without being further manipulated by either the crooked "Secretary" Paulson or his former domain -- Goldman, Sachs.
IS SECRETARY GATES A TRUE AMERICAN PATRIOT OR JUST ANOTHER SACRIFICIAL GOAT BOY ??
Robert Gates can prove his devotion to the country which has for so long sustained him, and awarded him with positions of trust and honor at CIA, and he can take comfort under the umbrella of HOLD HARMLESS provided by the Durham Trust and its signatory. He can act against the criminal misbehavior of the likes of Paulson and Ben Bernanke and in the bargain, help to rebuild the entire structure of the U.S. military.
Or he can shuffle along in the shadows of Bush, Baker and Boren and then summarily be despised and forgotten, by history, as the man who could have saved the Army ... but didn't.
Secretary Gates knows everyone who is someone in the current administration of George W. Bush, and he knows a lot of the somebodies who nobody else knows .... including, one imagines, the ranks of the Grey Foxes, the men who well remember that other great patriot of the old O.S.S. and CIA, Colonel Russell Hermann. They, too, took that Oath to Protect And Defend ....
And given that the late husband of V.K. Durham was also a ranked officer of the U.S. Navy, Secretary Gates has every reason imaginable to do what is right by his widow, and to do what is right in memory of a brave, dedicated, officer.
But will he ?
