READER on OLIN: WILL WE HAVE LESS OR MORE CONTROL?
Thanks for this ;-)

Re: OLIN, message 90914
This prediction of OLIN is reminiscent of something in a book by
Williaam Rees-Mogg & James Dale Davidson, "The Sovereign Individual"
They predicted that control over resources would shift from the state
to individuals as a result of information technology. Except, some
10 years down the track, who are the biggest spenders on I.T.
projects? Governments.
I.T. projects are fantastic because, unlike roads or train tracks,
they can be re-hashed every 6-10 years, creating huge opportunities
for govt expenditure, reducing 'un'employment, demonstrating 'high
tech' focus of the nation.
in the process, about 45% of of I.T. workers are effectively
high-class dole bludgers, (particularly so the project managers and
'standards' types, who are the real cost of any I.T. project - not
hardware, coders, maintenance people)
With Infotech , they can tax more efficiently and more effectively,
they can control the fate of the individual to a much finer level of
detail, more regulations can be created, and the transactions arising
therefrom can be processed in the blink of an eye.
So, Infotech increasingly subject to individual control? no. look
what happened to MP3.com. great idea, but extremely vulnerable to
big corporate reactions. if content is OLIN-ized, it means we'll
have less choice, less control over content.
Ipod is another leap forward in this direction.
OLIN will be nothing more than a successful implementation of
something like internationally-common data-classes. e.g., a bank
which is subject to a set of international rules can be interrogated
by any higher body in the heirarchy. bye bye privacy. bye bye
individual control.
The work of Scott Moore is relevant to this;
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~samoore/research/flbc/
standards such as ITIL, and ISO9000 series, are part of this thrust.
if one doesn't speak the lingo, or operate with it, one doesn't get
employed. And if one does not subscribe to it/ believe it, one may
as well find a new career.
I think wingmakers implies a ot more with its OLIN discussion, but I am willing to wait it out and see it happening by being an active part in it. I am staying optimistic, knowing that once the actual globalization has failed, we will begin anew with better technologies. So far the internet has proven to be empowering for many individuals. It has brought some people closer at least. I dont see it only in the negative.
