DAVID IRVING SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS! APPEALS... *PIC*
Yesterday British historian David Irving went on trial in the Viennese court for "denying the Holocaust", and entered a guilty plea while saying he had changed his views in the 17 years since the offence articulated in his 1989 speeches in Austria. The judge - Peter Liebetreu - repeatedly asked Irving if he still subscribed to the views articulated in his speeches. Irving: "I made a mistake saying there were no gas chambers in Auschwitz," he conceded. He claimed the Holocaust figure of six million murdered Jews was "a symbolic number" and said his figures totalled 2.7 million.
Liebetreu regarded this as a "strategic answer" although. State prosecutor Michael Klackl stated: "Mr. Irving is not a historian, he's a falsifier of history." Arguments over freedom of speech were entirely misplaced, he added: "This is about abuse of freedom of speech."
Flipping, flopping on BOTH SIDES - as when it fits - Irving IS an "historian" - and when it is not "suitable" - he is non...
Irving arrived confidently in the court room handcuffed, carrying a copy of Hitler's War (promotion "neccessary") and a PG Wodehouse paperback, and said in an interview before he went into the court room:
DAVID IRVING: I'm pleading guilty on the advice of my lawyer.
Q: Can you tell us why?
DAVID IRVING: I have no choice. The way the law's written, I've got no choice. It's a crazy law.
Q: What will you say about the Holocaust?
DAVID IRVING: I probably won't speak very much. I'll answer questions, but I've been advised to keep my mouth shut.
Q: What are your views now on the Holocaust?
DAVID IRVING: Obviously I've changed. History is a constantly growing tree, the more you learn the more documents and archives become available, the more you learn, and I've learnt a lot since 1989. This is ridiculous, for me to be standing here on trial for an opinion I expressed 17 years ago, is ridiculous.
Austria has Europe's toughest law criminalising denial of the Holocaust. This was mirrored in the sentence: three years in prison. Irving was led from Vienna's biggest courtroom back to the cells where he has been held for the past three months.
Irving appeared stunned by the sentence, and told reporters: "I'm very shocked and I'm going to appeal."
Irving's lawyer - Elmar Kresbach - one of Vienna's most prominent defenders - said he considered the verdict "a little too stringent": "I would say it's a bit of a message trial,..."
Mess-age indeed! Good bye, "free"-speech - although I am still questioning WHAT for a role Irving IS playing and what this was all for...
