So far this year our electric bill is less than half of last years and we have not burnt as much wood this whole season as we did in one month last winter. It is not unusual to not even have a fire in the day time or if we do, we have to open a door or window much of the time. It is also not unusual to not even have a fire at night now and then.
While driving over the road, normally I run into a good bit of snow by now but this year there were only occasional flurries where I traveled. The weather is far less harsh than normal all across Pennsylvania into New Jersey compared to most years I have driven in that area. Odd to say the least.
Winter is far from over season wise and we still might see some nasty weather but I am starting to wonder.
One troubling thing I have noticed is that bodies of water are drying up. There is a large lake that crosses I-85 north of Raleigh NC that is all but dry. I have been traveling through there for over 30 years and have never seen it this low. There is also a really large lake east of Knoxville Tennessee on I-40 which looks to be at least 12 to 14 feet low though I may be wrong on how low it really is. That is another area I have been going through for 33 years and never have seen that lake even close to as low as it is now. There are many other lakes I have seen that are very low but have no idea if this is record low or not in those areas.
A sad note, we don't even bother feeding the wild birds any longer, there are none. Once we would have 200 to 400 birds of 38 different varieties eating daily and run through 50 pounds of sunflower seed, mixed seed, 5 pounds of thistle, and a few pounds of a peanut butter/beef fat mixture every week. Now it is rare to even see birds here. What a loss!
