The question is why are there "Holocaust Denial Laws" on the books in some
countries in the first place?
And why have the citizens of these countries allowed their governments to make
such laws?
I don't understand why and how we've given up our rights for freedom of speech
to a people and event that may or may not be factually true...

It is long past time that the world wakes up to the fact that the so-called Israeli leaders and lobby groups DO NOT have the interests of ordinary Jews at heart. What is very clear is the fact that they shamelessly use the suffering of the ancestors of the people they claim to represent to further their own agenda. And just what is that agenda? Clearly it is to foment war in the Middle East and apparently to destroy all Semitic people therein - including Jews.
I think it's outrageous that Irving or anyone are arrested for "thought
crimes". As an American it makes you laugh because it shows that the Austria
of today is exactly the same as when it was part of Nazi Germany! Intolerance
at it's finest!
I am very disappointed with Austria. Free speech must be preserved. The 1st
Amendment to the US Constitution protects free speech and this includes the
right to speak about all topics, i.e. no subject is verboten. One must have
the freedom to question everything, including the "evidence" claimed to support
the "holocaust." Denial of the right to question is denial of justice. There
can be no justice where one is prevented from questioning the purported
"facts." Anyone who denies my right to question the so called "facts" makes me
an involuntary slave and that is both unconscionable and contemptible. I must
have the freedom to listen to all sides of a controversial subject and I must
be free to make my own decisions. I have a right to my opinions and beliefs
and so long as I do not harm anyone, then no one has a right to deny me that
freedom; for it to be otherwise admits a police state the likes of which has no
place in modern society. Those who would deny me the right to listen and think
are more dangerous and evil than any criminal ever in the history of this
planet.
No need for "kicking" someone out - as THIS would be the repetition of a pattern, simply not suitable for OUR SKILLS. No need to "blame" Jews for an agenda that was played on THEM too. Fear is a bad counsellor and I refuse listening to "bad whispers". Jews are afraid the most from what (allegedly) happened. They" have been brainwashed too and were "instrumentalized" just as others were. We can do better, I am sure - THIS time - and ever hence. "Wir sind auferstanden..."
