Here's something else people do to themselves (or "overdo") and don't even know that they're harming themselves; this is the perfect venue to bring it up...
Hemachromatosis is a condition of too much iron in the blood. (I'm not a physician nor an expert by any stretch, but I am a sufferer, so I know this stuff only from experience....) It can be a devastating condition and can create a host of illnesses. I love what the hemachromatosis website says: Everyone's going do die of something....but it doesn't have to be this.
It is probably the most UNDERdiagnosed condition in the U.S. The condition is genetic and usually there are no symptoms until it is too late. I lucked out and mine was found when I was young, so I've lived with it for awhile.
There are a lot of things people can do to alleviate this condition--giving blood as frequently as possible is but one--but it is one I don't do. There are many things an HC patient can do to prevent the condition from worsening, tho.
One of these is to be careful with vitamin C intake. A lot of people like to take their supplements with meals; it's easier on the stomach. HC patients, however, suffer because C creates a condition of "iron absorption" from any food you consume at the time you take the vitamin.
People with HC need to be careful with vit C intake; they can inadvertently worsen their condition, thinking they are enhancing their immune system. Take C's one hour before or two-tree hours after a meal. Best idea is to just do the ascorbic acid thing--it avoids the "C" altogether, increases immune suport, and doesn't create more iron problems. I'm sorry I don't have the ascorbic acid recipe at hand; a good health food store will probably be able to tell you.
I've had a couple of misguided email responses, so just to let those know who don't--this column appeared in our issue of Disclosure released yesterday. It is an opinon piece on an opinion page in a paper that has a circulation of 4,000 and a staff of TWO who are VERY opinionated. We did not cite references and all that in the column because, basically...what we wrote is pretty much common knowledge, as long as you are not mired so deeply in mainstream media AND mainstream medicine that you believe everything you're told by 'THE EXPERTS'....but by no means stop writing. We love to hear from any and every one.
Ah....venting....it's so nice...
Peace to all,
Ang
