This "Saros" cycle eclipse business sounds awefully complex and EGGspert-like, but is very simple to understand, and I feel you should see how the star gazers work, or at least how I pull my pieces together in peace.
The upcoming annular eclipse - 3rd October 2005 - is the 43rd eclipse of "Saros 134". The series began with the first of ten partial eclipses on 22nd June 1248. The first eight central eclipses were total, which were then followed by sixteen hybrid events. The first purely annular eclipse occurred on 8th July 1861. After the last of thirty annular eclipses (on 21st May 2384), the series will produce seven more partial eclipses before ending in August 2510.

X-planation:
Sun & Moon meet in the 11th Libra degree while South Node (Karma or "The Past") is at 13-14 Libra, thus it creates an ANNULAR or ring type Eclipse, and it means that powerful forces of past present and future come into one small pocket. Now look at the date of the starting & matching eclipse: 1248...
One key event that started then was:
1248: The 7th Crusade - the 1st - lead by French King Louis IX (9th).
Damietta was captured a year later.
The French King was subsequently taken hostage and had to pay a large ransom,
and then Damietta was retaken by the Moslems.
1861 in July: Battle of Bull Run. The Union Troups are routed.
