Williams and his father, Jeff Williams, moved to California from Maryland about a year ago, the boy's mother, Linda Wells, told The New York Times. Wells and Jeff Williams were divorced 10 years ago, and Andy had lived with his father since that time, she said.
Her son last visited her in her North Augusta, South Carolina, home over Christmas, Wells said, adding that he and an older brother visiting from Atlanta, Georgia, "hung around the house, played video games, watched TV, went to the movies."
"I never saw any moodiness there, other than teen-age stuff, and then you'd just change the subject and he was fine," she said.
'Skinny, but tough'

Authorities and witnesses said Williams -- said by some to have been "picked on all the time" -- had talked over the weekend about taking a weapon to school, but that he later said he was joking.
But Williams' mother told The New York Times that her son was an avid sports participant, "a little skinny, but tough," and Stevens said the boy was "not picked on like a lot of people are saying."
Classmate Melissa Gern considered Williams a good friend -- "He was so sweet and I loved him," she said -- but she told CNN she now felt betrayed and worried.
"I mean, there's two people dead because of him," she said. "He murdered two people and I want to know how he's going to live with himself."
