As the White House receives its newest occupants, a window of opportunity opens
for Americans committed to repealing the income tax. President Bush hails from
the state of Texas a state that gets by quite nicely without an income tax. Many
leaders of the national sales tax movement, both in and out of government, hail
from Texas as well. Many have his ear. President Bush has already signaled he is
open to major tax reform as a long-term goal. Replacing the federal income tax
with a national retail sales tax is not a partisan goal. In the last session of
Congress, Representatives Collin Peterson (D-Minnesota) and John Linder
(R-Georgia) joined to sponsor just such timely legislation, and recruited
significant numbers of cosponsors from both sides of the aisle.

All that remains is for us to get to work. If there is one unfortunate lesson
learned during the past several years, it is that courage and leadership are
rare among the political class. Most elected officials are cautious and
primarily concerned with retaining office. What's more, abolishing the income
tax would severely curtail their power. Therefore, although the political
situation has never before been as favorable for reform as it is now, our
friends in Washington will not move if not pushed.
Advocating income tax repeal is not about being Republican or Democrat, Liberal
or Conservative. It's about believing in individual liberty, personal autonomy,
justice, fairness, and empowerment. It's humanitarian. As more Americans are
educated about the benefits of converting to a national sales tax, momentum
grows for the proposal. Once that momentum hits critical mass, the politicians
will feel the quaking of the ground beneath their feet, the rumbling caused by
the energy of grassroots.

There are many ways for citizen-activists to seize the moment. Of course, urging
Washington Representatives to support legislation such as last session's
Linder-Peterson Bill is an easy first step. Attending representatives "town
meetings" and other community meetings and
working in "plugs" for a national sales tax at every turn is another.

We must educate our fellow citizens about the injustice of the unfair income tax
and how to replace it with a consumption tax. This means sending information to
email lists; speaking on the topic at church and civic group meetings; writing
letters to the editors of newspapers and magazines; calling in on talk-radio
shows.
It falls to each of us to find our own best way to help the cause and one thing
is certain: the window of opportunity will not remain open indefinitely.
The Latin expression says it best: carpe diem ~ and in English? - Seize the day!
