I served on the America for over 4 years. The America and the Kennedy did not
go through a overhaul called SLEP (ships life extension program). All of the
older oil burner carriers did go through this, Forrestal CV-59, Saratoga CV-60,
Ranger CV-61, Independance CV-62, Kitty Hawk CV-63, Constellation CV-64,
Enterprise CV-65.
The America did go through a extensive overhaul that was supposed to be
similiar to a SLEP back in 1987-88.
I think they sunk the USA because it was cheaper. I know they had sent a lot
of ships to India for scraping.
