Chirac is to announce the new French prime minister any moment. The French --- so say some newspapers --- want Sarkozy, a 50 year old, Finance Minister elected official and party chief for Chirac, a comparately very young bulldozer technocrat from the Chirac school -- who aims openly for the succession of Chirac defying the old man himself. Hope he knows what he is doing.
In the background waits de Villepin, career diplomat and literary philosopher who sees the bigger picture and who could care less about never have been elected once by a public. he is quoted as having said elections is for idiots.
It is said Chirac would logically prefer de Villepin one of his own best guys, but Sarkozy threatens with party palace rebellion etc. I think Chirac has about had it, too old for this kindergarden.
It could not be more different in style, but in common they have this sheer and cool French arrogance. Sarkozy wants to put France upside down, and it could be worth a try, if that is what the French want.... Chirac has a 3rd choice, if I were him I would bring in FABIUS now, that would be the genial move to check mate France and Europe. I think Fabius would not go for that trick. He has also the Elysee in view. The other rule in France is no one has ever jumped straight from Matignon to Elysee, but at least each one was once if not twice (Chirac) prime minister.

a 4th choice, imaginative but less probable, is to name the military-industrial-complex-technocart lady who is now defense minister, and have her handle what no one can handle... the French way of getting business done...
in the end France can do without this spectacle.

It is of importance only in so far as whoever is named now will have to prepare France for earth changes, in 2007 a new team will arrive no matter what. I hope we are clear on what the job will entail. On this note. A new hurricane season is approaching, it will be fun...
