About eighthundred years ago King Lalibala created a marvelous gift to the world - that have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage. And this was about the time of Pope Celestine V, who's pictore of the Coronation was mentioned as a "clue" to the mysteries of Rennes by Sauniere...
Coincidene? No!
Sometimes called the Eighth Wonder of the World, Lalibala contains towering churches that were carved from the soft, volcanic tuff in which they stand.
Some are completely hidden in deep trenches, and others stand in open caves. A complex labyrinth of tunnels and narrow passageways with crypts and galleries connects them all.
Within this mystical world, the 38 feet tall with 72 pillars, Medhane Alem, is not only the largest in Lalibala, it is the largest monolithic rock-hewn church in the world - even more impressive than the wellknown Petra. The oldest of the churches, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Bet Maryam is the only Lalibala monolith with a portal.
The cruciform-shaped Bete Giorgis which reminds us very much on TEMPLAR-design is up to my view the most impressive one! According to myths it was carved out of the rock with the aid of Angels! Its interior shows various depictions of Saint George killing the dragon...
In this context it is interesting as well, that Italy has returned the big Obelisc of Axum to Ethiopia the day before yesterday. The 50 ton stele which was "exported" by Mussolini 1937 to Rome, cut into pieces, loaded on board of the big Antonow-plane and transported to the city of Axum...
