HANOVER, N.H. (AP) - Police were investigating the deaths of two Dartmouth College professors Saturday night, a dean at the school said.
Hanover police have refused to release information on the investigation, but Edward Berger, dean of faculty for arts and sciences, identified the victims as Susanne and Half Zantop.
"Apparently, the police were called to the home sometime around 6:30 p.m.," Berger said. "They and the guests (the Zantops) were expecting found the bodies."
Berger added, "All I know is I got a call from safety and security about 9:30 p.m. and the chief of safety and security had been in contact with police and he reported to me the names of the two faculty involved."
Several police officers and sheriff's deputies surrounded the Zantop home which sits in a wooded area.
Susanne Zantop was a German professor. Half Zantop was an earth sciences professor.
"They were both distinguished teaching research professors at the college," Berger said, adding they had been at the college at least 25 years.
"They were wonderful, dedicated teachers who were involved in so many different ways on campus and in their research," he added.
"I'm quite shocked," Dartmouth President Jim Wright told The Associated Press before Berger confirmed the names. "I don't know if I'm going to sleep tonight, wondering about this."
